Here is a no-drama script you could use,Talking to your Boss, and Talking to your Family
Talking to Your Boss
(Adjust based on whether it’s about time, tasks, remote work, etc.)
*“Hi [Boss’s Name], I wanted to check in about the recent changes. I’m committed to meeting the new expectations, but with some of the adjustments, I may need a little flexibility to manage my family responsibilities. Would it be possible to [suggestion — e.g., shift my start time slightly, work from home one day a week, etc.]? I believe this will help me stay fully productive without conflict. I’m happy to work out the details.”
Talking to Your Family
“Hey everyone, things are shifting at work — they’re asking for [explain the change briefly]. It might mean [more hours / different times / more travel]. I’ll need your help with [specific thing — e.g., dinner, school runs, giving me quiet time during meetings]. Let’s figure out how to make it work together so we don’t all end up stressed.”
Notice how both versions:
- Stay calm and direct
- Focus on solutions, not complaints
- Open the door for flexibility instead of demanding it
